DocYOUmentary | 3 Docs To Check Out

Hello luvas! Our docYOUmentary series is back to give you the run down on three rad documentaries we think you should check out.

20 Feet from Stardom (2013)

This doc tells the stories of backup vocalists. Through interviews with various singers, and the artists they back, we get a glimpse into the lives of the people that sang some of the most famous hooks in music, and those that have backed up the most famous names in the industry. It was extremely interesting to hear anecdotes of sessions and performances, from Darlene Love working with Phil Spector, to Lisa Fischer backing everyone from Luther Vandross to Sting. It was also great to see how highly the most idolized artists in the world spoke about these wonderful talents. It gave an interesting look into the backup singer-artist dynamic, and also the internal struggle of choosing between living a life in the background, or finally standing in the spotlight. Some found it wasn't for them, and some are still chasing the dream. There are stories of unfulfilled potential, and others of perseverance paying off. The most exciting part, for me, was hearing Merry Clayton tell the story of the night she sang the hook on The Stones' Gimmie Shelter. AMAZING. If you're into music and music history, this one is a definite must see.

Bully (2011)

Bully is a film that follows 5 kids' attempt to deal with the harsh bullying they face on a daily basis. It gives insight into the bullying epidemic sweeping U.S schools, and the tragic consequences that come along with it. This one made me ugly cry like I've never ugly cried before. It really shines a light on the current state of society, and the environment we're sending our children into everyday. The things these kids go through is absolutely appalling. I sincerely hope that everyone has a chance to watch this, and that it will effect the way parents teach their children to act towards one another. Check out the website for more info on the on-going project.

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son about his Father (2008)

Dear Zachary is a doc that set out to document the life of Andrew Bigby, for the son he would never get to meet - Zachary. Touching right? It features interviews from everyone who knew and loved Andrew. But there is way more to the story than meets the eye. This is a film has a bomb dropped in it that will rip your heart out of your chest. Had I not read a spoiler prior to watching, I would've been a complete WRECK. Though it set out to be a touching tribute (and it was), it turns out to be a much more than that. It shines a light on the unbreakable spirit of two parents, the embarrassing, incomprehensible decisions made by the Canadian government, and documents a struggle with a real-life monster. As a result of the actions of Andrews' parents, and this doc, Canadian Law has been forever changed - showing the incredible power and necessity of film.

Enjoy watching!
